Tribunal seeks GPs with knowledge and experience in mental health

The Government’s intention to reform Victoria’s Mental Health Act 1986 includes a key reform to replace the current Mental Health Review Board (MHRB) with a Mental Health Tribunal (Tribunal). Tribunal membership will expand to include registered medical practitioners with knowledge and experience in mental health.

Registered medical practitioners will be employed in a sessional capacity for a period of five years by the Governor-in-Council on the recommendation of the Minister for Mental Health.

The Tribunal will be an independent statutory body that conducts hearings to determine whether criteria for compulsory treatment apply to a person. Where all the criteria applies, a person may be detained and compulsorily treated for their mental illness. The Tribunal will also conduct review hearings for security patients (prisoners requiring compulsory mental health treatment).
