Mental Health Tribunal appointment opportunity

27 September 2013  Coordinator Connect

Applications are now invited from Psychiatrists and Registered Medical Practitioners for appointment to the Victorian Mental Health Tribunal.

Comprehensive reform of Victoria's mental health legislation is a central element in the Victorian Government's agenda for mental health.  Establishing a Mental Health Tribunal is part of the proposed legislation designed to put patients at the centre of decision making about their treatment and recovery, and increase safeguards and oversight of services.

The Mental Health Tribunal will be an independent statutory tribunal established by the new legislation, which is due to commence in 2014. The Tribunal will replace the Mental Health Review Board and Psychosurgery Review Board of Victoria.

The primary functions of the Tribunal will be to determine whether the criteria for compulsory mental health treatment apply to a person. The Tribunal will make a Treatment Order for a person if all the criteria in the legislation apply to that person.

Members will be appointed in a sessional capacity for a period of up to five years by the Governor-in-Council on the recommendation of the Minister for Mental Health.
